Hinge Profile Dos and Don’ts

Top Hinge Do’s and Don’ts for More Matches (Read This First!)

There are a plethora of online dating apps, but only a few are worthy of your precious time. Hinge is one such app that allows you to connect with like-minded individuals.

The dating app currently enjoys rave reviews from both men and women for meeting potential matches. Hinge reports that almost 90% of its users are between 23 and 36 years of age.

Hinge is different from other dating apps in many ways. Using the app for networking and dating is simple. However, the key is to make your profile interesting enough to attract the maximum attention from the opposite sex.

Hinge Profile Dos and Don’ts

What are the Top Hinge Dos and Don’ts?

Unlike Facebook or Tinder, you don’t have to give much too much information about your likes and dislikes. The purpose of Hinge is to match you with the right person so you can take things to the next level. Hinge also concentrates on mutual connections and friends to match you with people you may already know.

If you want to create an appealing Hinge profile, here are the top dos and don’ts of setting up a Hinge profile, along with some Hinge profile examples.

Top Things to Do for your Hinge Profile

Tip #1: Choose Impressive Hinge Photos

Hinge requires users to choose and upload six photos/videos to express their personality. Opt for pictures that give an insight into your lifestyle, work, or hobbies. Thanks to its interactive format, any user can comment on your profile sections, such as photos, directly. That means each one of your pictures can spark a conversation.

When you choose photos as conversation starters, you offer an easy way to break the ice between you and your potential match. Include a variety of photos that show prospects of your hobbies, interests, and life. Avoid selfies and include at least 1-2 full-body shots.

Tips for Choosing the Best Photos

Here are the tips to help you click the best photos for your Hinge profile.

  • Make eye contact with the camera
  • Remember to show your complete face in a picture
  • Wear a variety of outfits that highlight the most attractive things about you
  • Don’t use old photos, and make sure you pick recent ones with a nice background. An inspiring location or background will inspire your potential match to ask about the beautiful spot
  • Give a glimpse of your hobbies, lifestyle, interests, or love for pets
  • Use a high-quality camera for taking Hinge photos
  • Remember to choose high-quality pictures
  • Show your pet in at least one of the pictures
  • Seek honest feedback from your real-life friends

Things to Avoid

Your Hinge profile can fail to make an impression if you don’t avoid the following things.

  • Choosing filters or tools that change your face/body
  • Posting pictures of you with your ex-boyfriend/girlfriend
  • Uploading too many selfies
  • Choosing pictures in which you are covering your face with a hat or sunglasses
  • Removing too many clothes unless you are at the beach or vacationing outdoors

Tip #2: Work on your ‘My Story’ Section

Hinge allows you to choose three prompts from a list of 80+ prompts. Every prompt has a limit of 150 characters. That means you don’t have to write a detailed bio but short and sweet descriptions.

Generally, the first prompt should focus on your profile. Others should reveal something funny and inspiring about your personality. Women prefer men who display traits of honesty, courage, and a willingness to take risks. Men, on the other hand, can look for funny and honest answers.

However, that doesn’t imply men shouldn’t add humor to their answers because all girls like a good laugh.

Tip #3: Choose the Appropriate Hinge Profile Prompts

Hinge is different from other dating apps because no other app offers these creative and interesting prompts. Since you have to choose only three prompts, go for the ones that can help you find your potential match.

Here are some of the best Hinge prompts to add to your profile:

Some other prompts to choose from include:

The award I should be nominated for is…

I’m actually legitimately bad at…

Typical Sunday

You should not go out with me if…

Notice how these prompts focus on likes and preferences rather than listing traits and qualities. That’s what makes Hinge so much more interesting. Once someone remarks on your responses, you can connect with him/her to get to know them better.

That saves you from endless chatting and flirting online only to waste precious time.

Remember to choose positive prompts. People on dating apps like to have fun without getting into trouble. Learn to have a good time while connecting with like-minded individuals and avoid posting negative remarks to other people’s prompts.

Tip #4: Add One Funny Prompt Question

Don’t forget to have at least one funny prompt question. This prompt could be about anything related to your past relationships, your current ambitions, or your most played Spotify songs.

Again, showing your humorous side will make your Hinge bio more appealing. Going wild with your prompt choices is ok as long as you stick to just one funny prompt.

Here are some other funny prompts you can add:

Dating Me Will Look Like

My Biggest Date Fail

I’ll Know It’s Time To Delete Hinge When …

Tip #5: Re-Check Your Match Preferences

Once you set up your Hinge profile, don’t forget to re-check to change anything you may find offensive or too wild. That’s because you don’t want to promise anything you won’t be able to deliver later.

On the other hand, if you limit yourself too much, loosen up to have some fun online.

The app has a feature called ‘Discover’ where you can see other members. You can edit your preferences to adjust who you can see on Hinge.

Here are the steps to follow:

  • Choose ‘Settings’ on the lower right corner of your navigation bar
  • Choose the preference that you want to change
  • If you want a strict preference, turn on the ‘Dealbreaker’ mode.
  • Hit the back button.

No wonder Hinge is becoming so popular among today’s modern users. If you’re still not getting any likes for your Hinge profile, here are some common reasons why.

Top Things to Avoid for your Hinge Profile

Now that you know the do’s of creating a successful Hinge profile, here are the things that you should avoid at all costs.

1.      Repeating yourself

Don’t mention the same thing twice. Avoid choosing two prompts that revolve around the same subject. You will sound boring and repetitive.

Likewise, don’t choose generic answers that are always boring. For example:

2.      Crying over your break-up

Who would want to date someone dealing with emotional baggage? If you are not ready to let go of the past, don’t show it on Hinge. You know you’ll get over your ex-boyfriend or girlfriend once you find the right one for you.

For example:

‘Typical Sunday: Crying my eyes out wondering why my ex left me’

‘I Want Someone Who: Hugs me every day like my ex’

You Should Not Go Out With Me If: You are not ready to listen to me

I’m Weirdly Attracted To: Someone who looks just like my ex

Instead, write something like:

‘I Want Someone Who: Makes me laugh like there’s no tomorrow’

I’m Weirdly Attracted To: Dogs and dog lovers’

3.      Making Spelling or Grammar Mistakes

Nobody is going to run a spell check on you but avoid making common mistakes like misspelling or grammatical errors.

For example, some people make silly mistakes while answering prompts.

‘My most irrational fear: A person sleeping under my bad’

The one thing I’d love to know about you is: Whether you’re not as crazy about football as me

Pet Peeves: Liers

4.      Making Your Potential Match Nervous

While it’s ok to be funny or reveal your dominating personality, never intimidate or degrade your potential matches. Likewise, your profile will send up red flags if you mention things like violence, weapons, or drugs. Keep your profile as positive as possible.

5.      Demeaning Yourself

Don’t post anything that hints you have low self-esteem or no self-confidence. If your Hinge profile shows you are someone who needs a therapist and not a date, you will rarely get any matches. Avoid putting yourself down or making yourself look bad. Always put your best foot forward and show off your best self. It’s ok to be confident if you can back it up.

If you’re still having trouble, find out why matches don’t respond.

  1. Let’s not forget how Hinge doesn’t make clear at all what of your information is made public vs on life for billing purposes. All my info was public (including full name) and some woman told my wife I was on the site. (Who DOES that, btw.) Yes, I was wrong. Deleted profile and app.

    1. Sorry to hear that happened to you. As with anything, it’s important to read the terms and conditions for any service and to be careful before giving them your personal details.
